General Term Encompassing "Ascending" and "Descending"

Is there a general term that encompasses "Ascending" and "Descending"? What I would like to say is that a number may be doing one of three things: ascending, descending or having an unknown . I want to avoid something like "vertical direction" since this is misleading. (For example, it may have a horizontal direction or no direction at all.)
Many thanks in advance for any help,
Peter.

By "unknown" do you mean indeterminate, or do you mean momentarily static as at an extremum or an inflection point? If the latter, you might say it's "hovering."
