General statement singular or plural?

When we are writing a general statement or a fact, should it be singular or plural?

example: 1) women are "an organism" or 2) women are "organisms" or 3) "woman" is "an organism"?

(It's a rather odd general statement, but it can be written like that.)

It doesn't matter if you use the singular or plural form. They are both acceptable.

A dog is a great friend.
Dogs are great friends.
