but we have speech and speak
speak is a verb and speech is a noun
so in these sentences
A crowd gathered to hear her speak.
A crowd gathered to hear her speech.
As far as I am concerned speak is usually used as a verb not a noun and possessive pronouns are usually followed by a noun as follows
"her
