I would guess that "act from a place of optimism" is supposed to mean something like "act with an optimistic outlook".

I agree with the concept, but I would think one acts from within that place (rather than at it). So my version would be,
"He created a work of art that challenged viewers of it to act from within a place of optimism."
It's awfully long and rather grandiose, but it's art!
