General english vs english for specific purposes

I,d like any of you to tell me what are the advantages ,if any , of teaching English for specific purposes at secondary schools? Mainly the reading skill is exploited. This is the tendency in the province where I live and I cannot see the point.

The advantages may be mostly to the teachers rather than to the students. It's probably easier to teach just reading. It requires less training to make a teacher competent at teaching reading.
