The word gear has quite a few definitions, so I'm not sure which one might be confusing you.
One definition of 'gear' is equipment. This is a collective noun which, when used, includes a number of different items that would be used for a particular purpose: fishing gear might include a fishing pole, various hooks, boots, a bucket, etc. (i.e
