Gaze / Eyes

I know that both gaze and eyes work in this instance, however, I'm wondering if it's better to change it to "eyes" as that's what is mentioned two sentences later?

"He was walking towards his home, and kept his eyes/gaze fixed firmly upon the ground"

there are a few descriptive sentences in between

"His eyes fell upon a black cat ominously crossing his path."
