Gave him support while waiting

Hi

Can the sentence below mean that "support was shorter than waiting" or just is " the two actions are happening at the same time and occupying the same time," correct ?

"His friends gave him support while waiting for an injection."

Can the sentence below mean that "support was shorter than waiting" It can mean this, but I think the intended meaning is " the two actions are happening at the same time and occupying the same time" .

"His friends gave him support while waiting for an injection."

A problem here is that it is not clear who was waiting. Was it him or was it his friends?
