"Stalin’s advice to Khrushchev [gives] insights into his reasons for showing magnanimity towards the bourgeoisie."
Must 'gave' be used instead of 'give' if the point is to say that "Stalin's advice" gives us (i.e. the present writer and other modern-day observers) insights into his reasons for showing magnanimity towards the bourgeoisie?
I wonder what would be the implication if I use 'gave' instead? Or should 'give' be used just for the simple reason that the whole thing should be in the past tense?
I am always very confused about intermingling tenses on occasions like this.
Thank you. SuperESL
