Gasp vs pant

Hello forum users,

I have come across the following sentence in an exercise and even though I consulted the dictionary I still do not know why gasping is the correct answer instead of panting. could you please help me?

I don’t mind watching other people gasping / panting for breath.

I don’t mind watching other people gasping / panting for breath. I suppose because 'don't mind' suggests an unpleasant offer, and 'gasping for breath' indicates more discomfort than 'panting for breath'. However, both verbs fit reasonably into the sentence.
