Garnish but not garnish

Hi everybody,

I'm looking for an appropriate word for a particular kind of food. I can't explain it very well.

Mashed potatoes, rice, baked potatoes, pasta, and so on. We can eat them. Firstly I thought that it is the word garnish but dictionary writes that it is used to decorate a larger dish of food. So I don't know what is the appropriate word for this kind of food.

Thanks for your answer in advance.

Um, I didn't think for that exactly. It is a kind of food that you can ask in a restaurant. For example you can eat fried meat with these and you can choose it. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with restaurants. I have been in such places 10-20 times maximum (in my whole life).

Perhaps side dishes is what you're looking for.

Here is some menu terminology:

Entree: the main dish, such as a meat. It may come with a choice of vegetables
side dish / side order: vegetables, salads
specials - food that the chef has selected for the day
appetizer: a dish served before the main course
desert: a sweet to have after the main course.

Clivetypo - dessert
Oops! Emotion: embarrassed

Thank you. I think there isn't an exact counterpart in English for the Hungarian word 'köret'. 'side dish' is the best for this use, as I can see. It is a little bit wider set of foods (than 'köret'), but it is good.

Where I live, a side dish is something extra that is delivered on a small, separate plate.

Thank you. Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary says something similar. It mentioned 'salad' as a possible example for side dish and salads usually come with a separate plate in Hungarian, too. The word that I'm looking for doesn't consist salads. So far I think that there isn't word in English which shows a full analogy with the Hungarian word 'köret'.
