Garnered respectful receptions

Hi, I'm asking here because I thought about another meaning for "garnered" - Can "Won" fits here?
so they won respecful receptions? Receptions is a noun mass right?

"Edwards and Vilsack—both potential candidates for 2008—had
spoken earlier that day and garnered respectful receptions"

Top answer

'Won' is not quite right. 'Gained' or 'earned' is better. 'Receptions' cannot be a mass noun here because it is plural.
