Gapping comma usage

Online resource:
Some Americans wanted to base their national language on the speech of the capital; others, on the speech of the rural countryside.

There has to be some parallelism between the sentences in order to use a gapping comma, right in order to omit the repeated information. There are many instances where you may be repeating two similar related ideas but where omitting information isn't so easy (repeating information but in a different structure) and you may be need to repeat it.

The example feels like a history book and I think this approach is a different style altogether in my opinion.

He lost his job, much to his dissapoinment.

Does 'much' or 'just' usually start a dependent clause. There are expressions like: Much ado about nothing, but you usually associate these words with dependent information?
