gala ball

But LaFitte’s early training and education stayed with him, and he was esteemed as a complete gentleman, wit, and master of drawing room prattle. Business brought him to Charleston Harbor; a flock of invitations brought him to a gala ball.

Could you tell me what gala ball is?

A gala ball is a very fancy formal party where people get dressed up (tuxedos for the men, gowns for the women). There is usually live music (an orchestra), food, drinks and dancing.

AS's answer is correct, though this gala ball, taking place in the late 1700s or early 1800s, may not have included all of the details AS suggests. I'm not sure they drank in the presence of ladies, for instance.

Sorry, I can't understand what your last sentence means. Why do you speak of the presence of ladies?

There have been times when drinking and carousing has not been proper in the presence of ladies.

OMG.... I'm still confused. I have know what gala ball is, and I think you are talking about the scene do the gala ball. But I can't understand why you refer to the lady or what precence means here. Existence? In front of somebody? Why are drinking and carousing not proper in the prescience of ladies?

Not prescience!—presence. I believe men once did not drink or smoke when there were women present.

The men would go into a separate room, usually a library-style smoking room for cigars, cognac, sherry, and other drinks. They would talk politics and other lofty subjects.

These activities were considered not "suitable" for the fairer ***.
