Gain credit for

Students chosing this university will have the opportunity to gain credit for their prior learning in their middle schools.
What does "gain credit for " here mean? Does it mean "loan "or school mark" or "honor"?
Thank you !

It means that the university may be willing to treat some of the classes the students have already taken elsewhere as though they were taken at the university, and so they will count as part of the work the student must complete to get a degree.

I think perhaps you mean high school rather than middle school. Middle school is for very young children, before they enter high school.
