Gain

It gained more than a 50-percent stake of the company in January this year.

Can I replace 'gained' with 'owned' or 'bought'?
Thanks.

'Bought' is OK, I think, though there are other ways to acquire shares; 'owned' is not good.

Note also that "bought" implies that the whole stake was bought in January. "gained" could well mean that the January purchase was a smaller one that tipped an existing stake over 50%.
