Future time

Hello, teachers.

Here is a sentence which I don’t think of grammatically correct: The match is over in half an hour. It must be clear who is winning.

I would say “The match is over in half an hour. It must be clear who is going to win.” Or “The match is over in half an hour. It must be clear who will win.”

To my ear, the present progressive shows us something has been arranged by someone. If so, the match would be unfair. The present progressive referring to a future time indicates the events are in control, yet the match should be arranged by no one. In fact, we can use be going to to say the evidences or will to predict it.

Am I right?

Thank you very much.

All three are correct. who is winning. who is going to win.

  • All three are correct.
  • who is winning.
  • who is going to win.
  • who will win.
  • Don't take that idea about "arranged events" too seriously.

All three are correct.

... who is winning.
... who is going to win.
... who will win.

Don't take that idea about "arranged events" too seriously. That's only one usage of the present progressive.

win is an "achievement verb", that is, it happens at a specific point in time. (Other examples are land (e.g., a plane), and die

Hi,

The match is over in half an hour. It must be clear who is winning / gong to win / wil win.

'Must' is not appropriate here. There is no necessity that the matter be clear at this time.

Say

It is clear who is winning / going to win / will win.

or, if you like,

It is not clear who is winn

Clive'Must' is not appropriate here.
Hmm. It seemed fine to me, though I may have mentally added "by now". I don't know whether that addition would change your opinion, though.

It must be clear by now -- half an hour before the match ends -- who is winning.
