Hi, I've been reading a text and one thing drew my attention, maily the use of the Future Simple after "when" and "if". Can you please tell me why the Future Simple is used instead of the Present Simple? Is it an exception to the rule?
"Each time the mountain has settled down without a major eruption, although some activity has continued. Yet when, or if, a major eruption will occur next remains unknown."
Thank you

We have here a form of indirect question, not a temporal/conditional clause. When will it occur? I don't know when it will occur.
