Future seen from the past

here is the scenario.

today's appointment

12 p.m. to 3 p.m. >> meeting.

3.30 p.m. >> collect my mother.

Due to the foreseeable traffic jam, I leave the meeting early at 2 p.m.

Q1)

if Now it is 2.30 p.m.,

my friend is asking me why you left the meeting early. What should I say?

a) I left the meeting early because I am collecting my mother at 3.30 p.m.

b) I left the meeting early because I was collecting my mother at 3.30 p.m.

Q2)

if Now is 7 p.m.,

my friend is asking me why you left the meeting early. What should I say?

a) I left the meeting early because I am collecting my mother at 3.30 p.m.

b) I left the meeting early because I was collecting my mother at 3.30 p.m.

I would think the answers would be (a) for question 1 and (b) for question 2.

However I am not sure of them. Is my guess right?

Right you are![Y] However, you have the wrong pronoun in your introduction to the alternatives. You should say: My friend is asking me why I left the meeting early. Or: My friend is asking me: "Why did you leave the meeting early?"
