Future in the past 'would'

Mary became convinced that I should be one of her team as she hatched plans to enter the first ever Eco-Challenge. She telephoned from the United States one quite Sunday afternoon.

The Eco-Challenge was a race conceived to take competitors beyond their limits. It would cross more than three hundred miles of desert.

Can we say 'It crossed more than...' instead of the future in the past 'would'?

Or do we have to use would?

Thank you

This is the first time for this event—it has never been run— so 'would' is a much better choice.
