Future in the past - examples

Are there three ways to speak of the future in the past?

1) using the verb 'were to': Several toe nails were bruised and were later to fall off
2) using the verb 'would: Several toe nails were bruised and would fall off
3) or using time adverbials: Several toe nails were bruised and fell off later

'were later to fall off' is also expressible as 'were going to fall off later', so maybe you'll want to include a fourth item in your list? CJ

Yes, I didn't expect to capture all ways, so I should have worded my question differently. Do you have a preference in my sentence?

What about 'were to fall off'? (without the adverb later) Does 'later' just help emphasize that it happened some time in the future in the past?
