Future in the past

What if I want to say that I was going to do something just a few seconds before something has happened, but I didn't do it. What I should say
"I was about to do something ?"
"I've been going to do something ? "

P.S. I hope my question is clear and I'm looking forward to any replies.

What about, if John has come into my room and I want to tell him that I've been meaning to call him ?Of course I don't have to do it , because he is already in my room . What should I say??

I was going to call you ??
or
I've been going to call you ??
