Future in past tense

There is a sentence on test paper:
I gave him my word that I would be more careful next time when I ____ my bike.

Should I fill in "ride" or "rode" into the blank?
Should I use "ride" because "next time" is future tense, or use "rode" because the event "I gave him my word" happened in the past?

This really confuses me and I can't find answer on Net.
Thanks in advance. Emotion: smile
