Futile, Sadistic, Pointless Films

What's the attraction? A group of young people, in their late teens or early twenties, is sadistically wiped out, one by one. One or more of the young women usually gets to beg for her life before she gets brutally done-in.
I'm thinking of "Jeepers Creepers". I saw this a couple of years ago while when I was contracting.
Essentially it's a 90-minute, bloody setup for a stupid pun that I saw coming ten minutes before the movie started. "Jeepers Creepers were did you get them peepers get it, get it? Real clever huh?"

No it really wasn't clever. But if you had to do it why not do it in five minutes and get it out of your system?
Then I saw they made a "Jeepers Creepers II".
Why?

There must be a market for this stuff. I haven't seen any of the Saw movies, but aren't they basically the same thing? To me good horror is suspense, not human buture shop gore.

I can answer the "why" by paraphrasing Francis Coppola himself: because "Jeepers Creepers" saved his production company.
In 2001, just after JC came out, Coppola

Actually the JC deal with MGM came first - FFC could not get any studio anywhere to give him any money for anything, buy he's helped MGM with whatever that awful sci-fi movie was, so they offered him a deal to make (I think it was ten) genre films aimed at the 15-25 year old audience budgeted at less than $10 million. JC was the first of those... and he seemed to have problems finding other projec

And that's not a pointless film. It's about this old monster who sniffs a boy's underpants, spends the rest of the story chasing him, then finally gets inside the boy.
The second one was about the same old monster who steals a little boy and does *** knows what with him, but the boy's father tracks the old monster down while he is attacking a sc

Its a diversion from reality. Its like picking a scab or teasing a blister. A little bit of fear and pain that we are kind of in control of is fun. JC is ****, and weird, and not one of my faves. Is it slasher? I dont know. Its just weird. The guy that made it is weird. Skip, what did he do? The Mac dude and the hottie are brother and sister. Thats weird. He p

"Se7en" was as gory and disgusting, but I wouldn't say pointless or nearly as futile.
It did an excellent job of drawing you in and it didn't end in a pun and a song. It didn't end with a victim begging to live, then getting snuffed.

I think you need that balance, and any story is going to be about people we care about... not lunchmeat.
The dirty secret in some horror movies is that the killer is the protagonist.
Right after SAW came out, a producer-director I know said he was looking for something like SAW, so I wrote up a short treatment... and he said, "No, like SAW!" and the danged thing was never made.
