Speech & Pronunciation

further /feɪr·ðər/ ?

Hi.
I wonder why an English teacher today here in Saudi Arabia said further /fe?r·ð?r/ with the vowel sound /e?/ not /?/. According to Heinle's Newbury House Dictionary of American English , it is /?/.

I find that strange. As you say, the usual vowel for 'further' would be /?/

The vowel for 'favour' would be /e?/

Was he/she a native speaker? If so, was he/she from Scotland?

Ah, well. Then it's anybody's guess how he came to have that pronunciation.
