Further / farther

Which is the difference in use and meaning of the two comparatives of far?
What about the two superlatives, is there the same distinction?

"Farther" is appropriate in describing actual, physical/tangible distances:

"That town is farther from here than this one."
"He lives farther [away] from you than I do."
"We will drive two kilometers farther today."

"Further" is appropriate for abstract and intangible distances:

"Let's discuss this matter further."
"Any further probing will only waste
