Vocabulary

fungus VS mushroom

Hi,

I had thought that "fungus" and "mushroom" designated exactly the same thing (the latter is just less formal?) until I saw the following sentence in a dictionary:

chenterelle:

any fungus of the genus Cantharellus, having an edible yellow funnel-shaped mushroom.

A fungus is supposed to have a mushroom?

If you could shed some light on this?

You don't go to the store to buy some fungi, by the way. We eat mushrooms, and we kill fungi.

1) You hear it many ways. I say "guy" when I don't say "funguses". Some say "jy" or "jee".

2) Right.

3) Few Americans would know either word.
