F.U.N.E.X?

0Hello02br

00I wonder if anyone can tell me the correct technical expression for 'speaking' in single letters? For example, 'F. U. N. E. X?' would translate as 'have you any eggs?' It's not an acronym, so what is it, please?02br

0 01i 00American Heritage Book of English Usage 02i 00lists a number of what they call acronyms used in informal emails. Most are easily recognized as acronyms [LOL, IMO], but others do actually "say" the words: OIC = Oh, I see; ICU = I see you. I'm not sure what this is called.

0This isn't exactly it -- but there's an old puzzle type called a rebus, in which sounds are represented by pictures -- a picture of an eye would stand for "I", a picture of a ewe would mean "you," and so on. Not really what you were asking for, but there it is anyway. 0-
