Fundamental to

Fundamental to the Psychodynamic approach to/of psychology is the manifestation and nature of the unconscious psyche. It was according to Lipps (1896) the unconscious, or das unbewusste, that forms the foundation of psychology. Freud later developed the meaning of the unconscious by dividing it into three parts: the descriptive unconscious, the dynamic unconscious, and the systemic unconscious (Erdelyi, 1985).

approach to is most likely what you want. It's one approach of several, I imagine, to psychology. On the other hand, if this approach is the approach always taken by all of psychology (which I doubt), you would say it's the approach of psychology.
