Join the sentences without using but, and + without changing the meaning of the sentence-

She complained that her brother does not know anything.Her brother claimed that he knows everything.
Attempt -
Contrary to what her brother claimed, she complained that her brother does not know anything.

My suggestion is:
Contrary to her brother's claims, she complained the he didn't know anything.
It's too bad that you are required to use the verbs "claimed" and "complain" in the sentence. That too makes the sentence awkward.

I don't usually like semi-colons, but you could say

She complained that her brother does not know anything; her brother claimed that he knows everything.

I understand that you cannot use but. However, what about whereas?

She complained that her brother does not know anything, whereas her brother claimed that he knows everything.

You have two statements. The conjunction whereas helps to show the contrast between them.

I just wanted to know whether my attempt was grammatical or not and it really did sound awkward to me too, but as i was in a test, i was not able to come up with something better than this!
