Fumble The Word Or For The Word

Hello everyone,

Is the verb "fumble" used correctly in the following sentences?

1. He fumbled the word "drive".

2. He fumbled for the word "drive".

3. He fumbled "drive".

If he mispronounced it, he flubbed, not fumbled, it. If he kept trying to say it but couldn't quite remember what the word was, he fumbled for it. I'd say he can't have fumbled "drive".
