full stop and quotation mark

Authors use full stop inside the quotation mark. To me this is strange.
Example: The story told above directs our attention to "modernism."
Here we quote modernism and the full stop should be after the quotation mark because as its name is self explanatory, a full stop is a full stop and should stop the sentence. Why the quotation mark is stopping the sentence?

"Place commas and periods inside, not outside, quotation marks. Place all other punctuation outside quotation marks unless it was contained in the original source. Follow this practice whether or not the comma is part of the original quotation.

  • The general rule is that commas and periods should be inside the quotation marks at all times, while all other forms of punctuation, such as question marks, colons, semicolons, and exclamation points, should be outside the quotation marks, unless they were contained in the original quotation.

The full stop goes inside the quotation mark if the quote is finished.

Everything inside the quotation marks is what is being quoted.

For instance:

"I love taking photographs," she muses, "but, sometimes I can take too many."

The full sentence was:

I love taking photographs, but sometimes I can take too many.

The first quote ends with
