What's the difference between "a frying pan" and "a skillet"?

I'm an American, and I don't see any difference. People who do a lot of fancy cooking tend to call it by what they think is the more "correct" name (or at least the more stylish name) "skillet", but most of us ordinary people just say "frying pan".
