Frying onion

Hi everybody,

I would like to reach a glassy state with onion and I'm looking for the appropriate verb/sentence for it. The picture is something like that:

I would say (as a part of instructions in a description of a recipe): 'Fry the onion till it becomes transparent.'

Is it correct?

Thanks for your answer in advance.

Transparent is the correct term. You might want to add 'slowly' or 'over low heat' so the onions don't turn brown.

The usual instructions are "Saute in hot oil stirring constantly until the onion is transparent"

Thank you Emotion: smile

I saw this 'sauté' verb in Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, but it was a little bit strange to me.

sauté is French. People who cook in fancy expensive restaurants use a lot of French words.
