Front end

Hi

Two soldiers are talking and one says that he was "more on the front end". And that he served under the general who did everything to get promotion without taking care for his soldiers. The general said he was brave, but actually he did nothing.

The other one said: I had some brass just like that (he's probably referring to the general). Talked a great game but never wanted to come up to the bat.

1. Does it mean that he spent most of his time on the front line?

2. What is he actually trying to say in that sentence about the game?
