Grammar

from vs. away from

Hello,

It happened when they were 2km away from the coast.
It happened when they were 2km from the coast.

Are both sentences OK, or is it mandatory to use "away" here? I guess "off" instead of "(away) from" would probably be the nicest way to say it, but I can't use it here for some other reason.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for your reply, Mr Micawber!

Not if they are inland.
Oh, yes indeed, I didn't think of that - they were supposed to be on a boat.
