From the brink of

The French philosopher Rene Descartes tried to look into the nature of no self but, in the end, had to pull himself back from the brink of the emptiness he discovered.

In this context, I'm wondering whether Descartes actually discovered the emptiness or not. It's becuase 'pull himself back from the brink of the emptiness he discovered' seems to mean he failed to discover it.

Thanks in advance.

No, it means that he did not step over the brink and fall into the emptiness that he had discovered . The whole statement is metaphorical, of course.
