HI.
Can you tell me which of the three is the best option?

1) "Jesus had the power to multiply THE FISH."
2) "Jesus had the power to multiply FISH."
3) "Jesus had the power to multiply THE FISHES."

In my opinion, #2 best describes it in modern English.

If you are speaking of his power in general, don't say 'the'. If you are just referring to a specific incident,say 'the'.

If the earlier context said 'fishes', use that word, otherwise don't.

I have to agree with Clive's point that the choice of word form depends on the context.
If your discussion is based on the King James Bible, you may want to stick with that wording.

Ok thank you all. I guess I'll go with "fish" (without "the"), because I want to refer to the generic ability to multiply food. If I choosed "the fishes" instead, maybe I would convey the idea that his power was limited to just the two fishes that are in the the Bible, so the ability would be less Jesus's and would have more to do with those specific fishes.
