which one is right?
"From last July, I spent 6 months in doing..."
or "Since last July, I spent 6 months in doing..."?

If you mean from one point in time to the present moment, you say "since": "Since last July..."

If you mean from one point in time to another, you say "from": "From last July [to another point in time]..."

I should have also said that "Since last July, I spent 6 months in doing..." is correct.

"Since last July" denotes the entire time period since last July. It doesn't say anything about those six months, which are merely a subset of that entire time period, and might be contiguous or fragmented, with the activity ongoing or completed.
