From his notes

1) The book was published from his notes.

Does this mean that the book was just his notes put together, or does it mean that the notes formed a basis for the book?
Maybe there was a lot of organizing, editing, discarding, rearranging, etc. done.

2) The book was published from his notes edited by his son.

Does this mean that the son edited the notes and turned them into a book, or that the edited version of the notes formed the basis for a book?
Maybe the edited notes were given to another editor who then did some organizing, discarding, rearranging, and even more editing.

Gratefully,
Navi.

Thank you very much, Mr. Micawber,

One more question here if I may:

In '2' does 'edited by his son' modify 'the book' or 'his notes'?

Gratefully,
