From 1 to 40?

Hi. Please help. Which is correct? I believe we have to use an en-dash for no. 3, but I didn't know how to type it from the keyboard. Also, I believe that for such phrases as "from side to side" or "from house to house," we have to include the word "from," as in sentences like "He swung his arm from side to side" or "He went from house to house."

1. Today, they will learn basic numbers from 1 to 40.
2. Today, they will learn basic numbers 1 to 40.
3. Today, they will learn basic numbers 1-40.
