I'm new at this so I'm guessing they might mix up the way to use the words go together

very terrified and absolutely frightened instead of vice versa?

I think that would be a problem related to the form.

The pronunciation problems will probably be related to their first language so I will ask them to repeat the words after me.

Would problems about the meaning be solved by explaining it in the same way you did earlier. Very frightened and absolutely terrified are different in the same way you explained it with the example of the snake?
