"Friend of Kate's" or "friend of Kate"?

Hello, can you please tell me if this scentence is grammatically correct?

"We're planning to visit a friend of Kate's on Saturday."

I think this is correct but a friend says it is incorrect and should be "friend of Kate". I realise it could be written as "Kate's friend" but is it correct as it is?

Thanks..... Andrew

'Friend of Kate's' (the double possessive) is quite correct and much, much more common than 'friend of Kate', Andrew.
