Talking to a friend of mine:Before I didn't really thought of watches as a collector's item.  I thought it was just something people wore/wear everyday.which is the correct verb or are both useable?

Before, I hadn't really thought of watches as collector's items. I thought it was just something people wore/wear every day. -- Both verbs are possible. Native speakers normally regress the dependent verb with the reporting verb, hence 'wore'.

The above is what I would say. Some people may say 'were' and 'wore', but watches still exist and at least some people still wear them every day.

If some day watches are largely replaced by cell phones and such, 'were' and 'wore' would be more correct. Has that day arrived already?
