Freud chased the hypnotic money changers from his temple

Freud himself has declared that the history of psychoanalysis proper, therefore, starts with the technical innovation of the rejection of hypnosis." In this unequivocal statement, Freud chased the hypnotic money changers from his temple. He made the use of hypnosis in psychoanalytic therapy structurally impossible. Persons are privileged to continue working in hypnoanalysis. However, from a Freudian point of view, it can only be considered an ersatz Psychoanalyst. (by Salter, Andrew)

Hello,

Q1. Do words in red mean "Freud has defined what is proper psychoanalysis, so he rejected to use hypnosis in psychoanalysis?

Q2. What does "Freud chased the hypnotic money changers from his temple" mean?

I knew Freud was a Jew. When I searched what "money changer" is on the Internet, and found the following text from Wikipedia. Does the author mean Freud rejected hyponanalysis in his theory (being metaphor as his temple)?

In ancient times in Jerusalem, pilgrims visiting the Jewish Temple on Jewish Holy Days would change some of their money from the standard Greek and Roman currency for Jewish and Tyrian money, the latter two the only ones accepted as payments inside the Temple.[3][4] With this Temple money the pilgrim would purchase a sacrificial animal, usually a pigeon or a lamb, in preparation for the following day's events.

Q3: What do words in blue mean? I stumble over "structurally impossible"?

Structurally impossible = theory impossble?

Many thanks!

Hi It's a difficult comparison. " (on the web, you can find this as 'Cleansing of the Temple') Perhaps, in a similar way, the nineteenth century hypnotists were making money but not doing any good for people. Freud, in a way, throws them out and attempts to replace them with psychoanalysis - a 'talking therapy' I agree that "structurally impossible" is a bad phrase.

  • I think it just means that Freud was successful in replacing the hypnotists and so their theory was no longer seen as credible Dave

Hi

It's a difficult comparison. In the Bible, Jesus throws the money-changers out of the temple, declaring "This is house of prayer!" (on the web, you can find this as 'Cleansing of the Temple')
