fret out a military coup

Gone were  the embattled,  vulnerable  presidents,  like  Fredric March  in  Seven  Days in May,  who  fretted  out a military coup  that sought  to  batter down  the  doors  of the White House with Burt Lancaster's  bemedaled pectorals.

Could you help me to understand what fret out means here?
Thank you!

From the context, it seems to mean 'gradually uncovered, with a lot of worry and anxiety. But it's a phrase I've never heard before. I remember the movie.
