French teenagers who called themselves Yamakazi

Modern parkour, an adaptation of this approach, was developed in the 1990s by a group of French teenagers who called themselves the Yamakazi.

Hi,
What does "Yamakazi" in the above mean litterally? Is it related with the word "kamakazi?" Thanks.

Top answer

Either the teenagers mistook it for kamikaze ('wind of the gods'), or they coined the name, 'yamakaz e ' ('mountain wind'), which is not a word used in Japanese. Yama means 'mountain', and is a common component of many Japanese nouns and personal names; kazi has no meaning.
