Freeway

Hi.

Despite some minor differences, dictionaries provide similar definitions for motorway, highway, freeway and expressway.

I would be grateful if you tell me the differences between them so I can distinguish them in context.

My appreciation is beyond expression.

The followings are Longman definitions but to me is still confusing.

Freeway:a very wide road in the US built for fast travel

Motorway: very wide road for traveling fast over long distances especially between cities

Highway: a wide main road that joins one town to another

Expressway: a wide road in a city in which car can travel very fast without stoping.

We don't have "motorways" in the U.S. so I can't help you with that.

This question comes up from time to time, so I wrote an explanation here:

Take a look at it. It might help.
