According to Frederick T Wood's English Phrasal Verbs both are correct.

When free means 'liberate' it is followed by from (free one from prison, from captivity, from the wreckage of a train, aeroplane, etc.). When it means 'relieve' it usually takes of (free one of a task, of responsibility for something).
