Hi,

Which of the following is most common?

The ball is falling at a free-fall speed.

The ball is falling at free-fall speed.?

Is there even any difference between the two?

"Free-fall speed" means nothing to me. Maybe you want "terminal velocity". The ball is falling at terminal velocity.

"Free-fall speed" means nothing to me. Maybe you want "terminal velocity". The ball is falling at terminal velocity. "A terminal velocity" does not work.

That's the correct term in physics, but to an average person it has to be something simpler and easier to understand.

Everybody has heard of terminal velocity. In fact, there was a movie of that name with Charlie Sheen. "Free-fall speed" will not be understood to mean that.
